August 14: Lake Louise

August 14

It's Friday morning and we have been told if we want to see Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, we need to get to the parking lots by 9 or wait until after 5 (there are 200 parking spots and 1000 cars want to park! per the info center).

We had time last night so we drove over to Lake Louise in the evening while we had time.  We drive by the Fairmont Lake Louise and walk a short distance around the lake.  It's a very popular spot as there are paved paths for all the guests to use.

Moraine Lake is around 6000 elevation surrounded by the Ten Peaks; they use a similar photo on their $20 bill
We do a three mile hike out to Consolation Lake; since we had to go in groups of four or more due to grizzly sitings, we join a French family (from outside Paris) for the hike.
We have to crawl over huge boulders that surround the end of the lake due to a huge landslide centuries ago.

The lake has no visible fish but is crystal clear. We also see several of the golden mantled ground squirrels.

.We see flowers blooming and many different types/colors of mushrooms.

We had planned to eat at the lodge next to the Lake but it started to rain and thunder.  Time to hit the road and head south.  We choose 1A, an older highway designed to let the animals roam more freely.
This guy is right by the road, less than 10' away!

We reach the town of Banff, a little over 7,500 people but lots of shops, bars, restaurants and lots of people.  We enjoy five different beers from several local breweries.
