August 7: Bend

August 7:  Bend

We take the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway where we can see Mt Bachelor (the area’s largest ski resort), walk down to Lava Lake where we see two young deer, and stop at Devil’s Lake with emerald green water and a clear bottom with white pumice stone.  There are lots of campgrounds as the lakes offer all types of recreation from fishing to swimming.

We take the Century Drive Bend and drive around the pretty city of 80,000.  Lunch is at the Deschutes Pub where we partake of an elk burger with carmelized onions served with sweet potato chips (I prefer fries, the chips always taste like they were burned) washed down by Deschutes Black Butte Porter and their even tastier Obsidian Stout. We head over to their brewery hoping to catch a tour but they are all booked for the day.  However, we do go to their tasting rooms where you each get four four-ounce tastes:  our favorites were the Obsidian Stout and Zarabanda (a Spanish take on the farmhouse-style saison with lemon verbena, pink peppercorn, sumac, and dried lime and a cool name!).

Our scenic drive, “Over the Rivers & Through the Woods Scenic Byway”, takes us past the Three Sisters, through the woods and over the Cascades Range and on up to  Portland.
