August 2: Hanford to
Los Osos
All packed and ready to travel to our next destination. Our first
stop is at Eberle Winery where we do a cave tour: 24 feet below the parking lot, the
temperature stays between 60 and 70 degrees to age the hundreds of barrels of
wine. Evaporation still occurs with
oxygen replacing the wine which will affect the taste unless more wine is put
back into the barrels. They have a
beautiful area with tables and mini-lights to host wedding receptions or other
gatherings; very romantic. If you become
a member, you can have private tastings with cheese, etc. there.
Then we had our tastings:
five per person with a choice of three whites, one rose and five
reds. We also tasted a delicious port
and had a sample of a red wine Cotes-du-Robles they had on special (regularly
$22 on sale for $10; we bought two bottles!)
Then off to The Taproom for lunch. We choose a beer flight of four beers with
IBUs (International Bitterness Units) from 30 to 100 (2500 is the highest online;
I can’t imagine how bitter that would taste!)
We tried four: unfiltered DBA,
Taproom Brown, Opal and Double Jack. All
were good even the 100 IBU Double Jack!
Lunch was Seared Ahi Tostado and Wookey Jack BBQ Brisket
Sandwich with fries and coleslaw. These
were tasty but dessert! Ah, this was “High
Gravity Sticky Chocolate Walnut Pie” with whipped cream and a thick caramel sauce…so,
so good! Four of us shared it (just in
case you thought I ate the whole thing myself!).
The rest of the drive was through beautiful wine country
after stopping at Trader Joe’s and Thacher winery.
